Hide and Thread is a small, independent furniture business, creating handmade and bespoke furniture for customers across Derbyshire and beyond.
With a small workshop and retail space in the vintage quarter on Dale Rd, Matlock, and appearances at artisan markets and craft fairs, Hide and Thread has a reputation for providing beautiful and hard wearing furniture at a reasonable price.
Our fabric range includes beautiful pure wool Abraham Moon and cow hide, to hand-picked roll-ends for those on a budget. Call Matthew to talk about your ideas or requirements. He is sometimes out on deliveries, or at markets, so if you are making a special trip out, please call ahead to make sure of opening times.
We now ship to customers who might be day visitors to Matlock, or to clients who order remotely. Speak to us about delivery charges and lead times. Nothing is impossible – just call to have a chat about what you’re thinking.
We handcraft footstools using unique cowhides and beautiful fabrics. We do everything, including building the frames, hand picking hides and sourcing beautiful fabrics. We handmake footstools to order – any size, leg, top and any covering is possible. Customers can ‘Bring Your Own’ fabric too.
Our cow hides are all Grade A South American Eco-skins. This means our skins are a by-product of the meat industry, providing additional income for plains cattle farmers. We handpick hides for unusual colour, speckle and brindle. They are sold as rugs and made into furniture including footstools, ottomans and headboards.
We handmake headboards to order, including flat and ‘Queen Anne’ style. Commissions range from single headboards for a child sized bed, to floor to ceiling graded velvet panels. Talk to us about your ideas.
We handmake Ottomans to any specification, and these can be covered in fabric or hide. Previous commissions range from large sewing box size to 7ft long storage seat benches. Tops can be plain or buttoned.
We handmake coat racks big and small; from wall mounted hook boards to bench-and-rack products, and can even make coat racks that fit into a corner! Customers specify what shelving, hooks and features they want to help make the most of their available space.
We handmake benches with wood and fabric tops to any specification. We can include shoe racks, lift the lid storage and ‘make around’ your own choice of storage baskets of wicker. Check out our face book and Instagram for examples of this work.
Bespoke wooden furniture
We handmake products for customers such as wooden chests (with or without fabric tops), under bed storage, crates and shelves and cabinets. Wood is waxed to create different colours or can be left for the customer to paint. Handmaking means products can be crafted to fit into any space, creating new storage opportunities!

We offer (physical and virtual) gift vouchers which make the perfect present for Mother’s and Father’s Day, birthdays, Christmas, weddings, new babies and new homes. Gift cards can be for any amount, and online payment links can be sent out to friends and family who want to contribute remotely to a larger voucher amount for a special occasion or coordinated gift.
We stock amazing eco-friendly throws and cushions from Weaver Green, a company which creates its soft furnishings from recycled plastic bottles! The gorgeous, Scandinavian style pieces are hand woven from up to 300 recycled plastic bottles. Blankets are stain resistant, easy to clean and good for allergy sufferers (moth resistant and won’t attract dust mites).
Bronte by Moon
We stock beautiful throws, cushions and fashion accessories from the historic Moon mill in Guiseley, Yorkshire. Bronte by Moon balance traditional wool crafting with innovative design. Our bespoke furniture service means that we can complement throws and cushions with footstools, headboards and ottomans which are made to match.
Designed and made by Jurate ‘Jacky’ Jakstaite, the JJ Textile range features the softest wool throws, blankets and cushions. Throws and blankets come in many sizes, from the cutest baby blankets to large throws. Jacky often draws inspiration from the natural world, so her designs of cattle, sheep and deer are a perfect reminder of the Derbyshire countryside.
